Generosity and Inspiration

I don't know Pamela Slim, but I wish that I did.

This morning, like many mornings, I pondered what I might write about today. Like most people who tether themselves to the discipline of daily writing, I think about how I might share something of value with you - people who take the time to read what I write here. I have always believed in loving one's audience. I learned that in a previous life when I was a musician. I think your attention is precious, so I try not to disappoint you. I try to share. I try to be generous. It's not always easy, but it's always worth it.

That's why I wish I knew Pamela Slim, because she is so generous. Ms. Slim is sending good stuff out into the world to many people unknown to her - people like me. So, this morning, I figure the best thing I can share is what Pamela Slim shared with me: her own declaration of independence.

I started working for myself about five years ago. Things have gone very well; we've been in the black and busy from day one. Today, we continue to grow, largely as a result of the extraordinarily generous and skilled commitment of my partner and spouse, Wendy. When I forget what Pamela's call to independence says, it is usually Wendy who reminds me.

A weakness of mine is that I sometimes forget just how important the people who choose to work with us and for us can be - and in Wendy's case, how incredibly important she is. Any one of them can choose independence from us at any moment. What's magical - as Pamela Slim points out so inspirationally and eloquently - are the possibilities inherent in being independent with us.

There is nothing like working for oneself, taking responsibility for one's own happiness, and sharing the possibilities that these things can create with others.

Pam's blog, Escape from Cubicle Nation, is wonderful. Have a read.
