Smile. People will think you’re smarter.

An interesting short piece in this month’s Harvard Business Review points out “....the bigger the employee’s smile, the more likely customers were to view that person as competent and the encounter - averaging just two minutes - as satisfying.

According to a Penn state and Bowling Green State study, businesses can win by:

• Hiring happy people;
• Creating environments and work cultures that produce genuine smiles from their employees.

Most of my work life I’ve noticed that people who combine upbeat attitudes, hard work, and optimism seem to not only perform better, but have a better time in their work life. Maybe this is because most people are more likely to want to collaborate with and help out someone with a ready smile. Maybe upbeat people have access to better quality collaborators and more points-of-view.

For an employee, there’s an obvious win here. If you’re already competent, here’s a simple way to manage evidence of that attribute: smile.
