What the Font?

If you've ever had to figure out what obscure and strange font is staring up at you from the page, you know what a daunting task that determination can be. It's taken me hours on occasion.

I don't know how many different fonts there are, but there must be thousands. While some are obviously recognizable, there are some I just don't want to remember. But they're kind of like a car wreck; I just have to look at them for a moment.

Well, there's a web tool out there that provides a glimmer of hope. The site, What the Font, will analyze a graphic file and give you a set of probable matches. But, you need to read the tips provided about what to provide for the search return to be most accurate.

Thanks - as always - to Andrew Taylor for sending this little link to me.

I tested this little utility with several strange Dutch contemporary type designs as well as with some pretty loopy display fonts. The right answer has always been among the "matches," but it hasn't always been first.

Nothing replaces the eye, here. But it narrows the field - a LOT.
