The Artisanal Movement

Anthropologist Grant McCracken is one of the most brilliant people writing today about how people behave - in real, not theoretical terms, - when they relate to products and services.

I've been reading his blog for months because his insights feed me. I actually find what he has to say not only interesting, but useful.

This entry on the artisanal movement is quite amazing. In my mind, McCracken describes how people like me are reacting to sameness, unmeaningful scale, the industrial paradigm, and a need to find meaning through connecting with people who actually create through craftsmanship and tradition.

I believe that the 10 dimensions that McCracken describes may be fairly easily translated into the arts sector. There is no question in my mind that we can learn from this movement. I see it as one of those large tectonic trends that are reshaping what drives consumption and desire.
